Looking after your teeth

Plaque, as we all know, is a film of bacteria that covers your teeth. Plaque contributes to cause gum disease and tooth decay.
To look after your teeth and gums and keep them healthy, it’s important to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly several times a day, especially last thing at night, and see a dentist regularly. A dentist will make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and advise you on a dental care plan to prevent future problems such as gum disease.

What causes plaque

Plaque is caused by eating foods consisting of sugars and starches, this then causes bacteria in the plaque which produce acids which in turn attacks tooth enamel. The acids trapped in the plaque cause a constant attack on the teeth, breaking down the enamel creating a hole or cavity. If plaque is not removed by brushing it can harden into what is called calculus, Which really is tartar. Tartar is the result of gum disease.
